Black Out (Blogging in Dark)

India celebrates it's 62nd Independence Day and we Kashmiris haven't still figured out a way in last 20 years to call this day as anything but a 'DEPENDENCE' day....!!! lolz
The whole valley has once again gone into complete darkness (literally darkness!)... A total black out
No, not the type which we witness in winters when our high voltage power lines snap off but this time it's something of a voluntary black out where people themselves turn off each and every source of light they can find....!
This all has been termed as a united way to protest the opression by armed forces and a unique way to celebrate our very own BLACK DAY..! (even the moon couldn't betray us tonight, it's hiding beneath the DARK clouds which no longer seem to have a silver lining and it looks like a storm is gathering in the dark....)
In fact if it didn't sound dramatic enough, people have decided to continously beat their roof tops for half an hour as a way to raise their voices in unison....and as I write this blog, I can hear the tapping of tinned roofs all over the valley....! (must confess, it sounds quite cool when all roofs go..BANG BANG....!!! surely some music directors can take some inspiration...I mean the different kind of new age music...let's say 'BLACK eyed peas' !!! hehehe)
I guess in the last two decades we Kashmiris have really taken protesting to an all new level....! heh... we have invented such ways to protest that can put any revolution to shame (though the only difference being that we ain't any revolutionaries but a bunch of suffering people who have been pushed to wall and have been left with no other choice but to revolt against opression and aggression..!!!)
Well, talking about the whole Kashmir issue...I have already made my point in my previous blogs and it doesnt make any sense to repeat the same miserable story again and again....though I am only 18 and still inexperienced but I have enough 'grey matter' to understand the complexity of an issue and especially when it's an issue of my very own people....maybe my point of view might not sound too authentic but I have my way, an original way of looking at things....and it gives me great satisfaction to see that at least my point of view has been recognised by a local newspaper..thus it won't make any sense if I start repeating the same old tragic tale time and again...! (hope you agree)
Hmmm....so with lights off and freedom resricted, there isn't much joy left in my newly found ADULT life...and moreover, my DVD library has already exhausted so now no new stuff left in the stock....
But then there exists a ray of hope, something I am really looking forward to...
Have been waiting almost three months for this day and it's here...
The brand new EPL (English Premier League) season starts tomorrow....and it promises to be yet another cracker...some mouth watering clashes on the first week end and my beloved Manchester United in action against age old rivals Newcastle United...(still remember those early days when Man United used to put 6 past the otherwise talented Newcastle goal keeper....!!!)
The best thing is that Fergie (Sir Alex) stayed and he made the wonder kid Ronaldo to stay...(Real Madrid still can't believe that money can't buy a Ronaldo..!!!)
This might well be Fergie's last season and we all expect it to be an absolute belter...the expectations are really high after the last seasons league and European double...We might repeat a treble or who knows with this young and talented squad a quadruple is possible.....Glory Glory Man United
With the valley gone into crisis...I think the devils are calling me, Oh yeah, they are the Devils in RED....!!!!
Finally, I got my team back in action....normal services resumed...(no longer sitting at home would be such a pain in the ass....all hail Man United....)

Anyways coming onto a serious note...My eyes can no longer suffer the pain of reading a blog in dark and when that blog reflects the misery of your own folk it causes even more pain....
I better put out my laptop lights before some one starts calling me a traitor....!!!
The whole valley has gone into such darkness that I can see no lights being turned on from anywhere....
Let's hope the morning would be bright and sun would shine for ever....(and yes one more wish, may Man United kick some ass...!)

nd yeah folks..
forgot to mention, Kashmir accounts for nearly 84% of the total power prodution in Northern India...now imagine if Kashmiri goods are boycotted in India and Kashmir retalliates with cutting off it's electricity supply to rest of India....
It will be A TOTAL BLACK OUT in Northern India......!!!!!!!!!!!and ironically Kashmir itself gets only 12 % of the total power it produces, rest 88% goes to our beloved Northern India....!!!!!!!!!!!

After reading this blog somehow.... very farfetched but ya relevant n quirky resemblance is that i am reminded of Anne Frank's Dairy during nazi rule...its heart breakin to hear this story from a 18 year olds eye...i respect your veiws and your responsible behaviour by not getting carried away with fundamentalist ideas and being sensible enuff to read and differentiate your role as an educated youth of the forsaken land.i know wat u feel as U said --traitor -coz u r not actively participating..but do not forget pen(virtual) is mighteir than sword.

well the picture is still blurr for most of us who are living outside kashmir...n certainly media has to answer for this biased-- saffronised reporting...i shall keep myself updated thru your blog... the comments i read on the article which u wrote on kashmir burns--(which was also published in greater kashmir) ---i do not understand wats there to compare the situation in 1989 or 2008 it was sad then -- its is sad today..i m sorry to say if still discuss such senitive matters from the precints of his/her own religion than the whole point is lost..of being democritic..of being secular...thats wat we fighting against... there is no doubt that this whole matter of giving away land to shrine committe is all masquerade for political agenda of BJP, VHP ETC. and the present ruling party known for its diplomatic spineless behaviour..so wat do u expect??
bloody hooligans on the name of shrine committe protest they jammed roads in delhi n many other places across nation- burnt public property , disturbed ppl for no reason at all wat is it... rampant aggressive policiatlly motivated hindu youth...do they even knw wat they are doin is the question which came to mind...>>> kar sevaks did they knw wat they were doin???...they left such a deep scar .. its a shameful chapter of indian history..U know it may be irrelevant at this point of discussion but i (a born hindu ) got so frustrated n disllusioned that i reverted to islam very recently. n i feel so much at peace truely...

NO ONE HAS TO JUSTIFY ...WHY PPL OF KASHMIR BE GIVEN HUMAN RIGHTS... WHETHER OR NOT KASHMIR SUPPORTS THE GDP.. WHETHER IT IS AN ESSENTIAL STATE WITH RICH ORES AND NATURAL RESOURCES, WHETHER IT CAN RUN ON ITS OWN MACHINERY...THE FACT N WILL REMAIN THAT HUMAN RIGHTS IS BASIC... IT IS EVERY CITIZENS ---RIGHT TO ACCLAIM IT...

I am in tears while writing this comment ...n i would say yes i am overtly sensitive.. but is it not human to be sensitive??... may be i m one of the lucky one s who still have the heart which moves when a fellow human gets hurt... the dehumanized behaviour which ppl in the center are dispalying should be condemned...
u opppress a human being till he can take the torture and then when he rebels its "pakistan"-- thats how we are breeding terrorist?? u have highlighted somethng so true.. ur blog may sound cliche to many who read... the same old story of mother burned sister raped...YES ...WAT WILL THE TEENAGER DO ?? its has been hindi movie plot since 1990s but ya wat beyond that ...this is happening in the valley since last two decades...n how ignorant ppl of india have become... its the denial mode...we all like to function in the denial mode..nothing effects us ...we get up read the newspaper or may be switch on the TV ... take a bath go to office n get back as if nothng happened... mornng newspaper reports become stale by the evening ..huh...

AND ya keep in mind its not because i m biased towards my new religion.. /or i m unaware that muslims as a community are pro-pak but why ??-- after so many years since partition why indian govt failed to make them feel at home... ooh ya a lot of ppl will say they themselves behave as an outsider... but is it there mistake give them safety of home they wont turn to any one for help (gujarat -godhra -- i have seen it burning with my own eyes ... n i cannot forgive ppl wat they have done-- anti muslim sentiments where so strong in baroda the most peaceful of the citys of gujarat that so many of muslims left there ancestral homes, business etc. for life)...i can understand ..since i have become a hijabi i can see the discrimination on faces.... none of them know i was an uppercaste hindu a few months back ..i was one of them ...wat anti- hindu sentiments do i carry?/.. but hell no they will discriminate on the pretext that i wear a hijab..i knw the plight as i am facing it toady ,...but i stern on my decision...

u r on my favourite list ..:) keep me updated

good blog but wrong facts, kashmir DOES NOT produce 84% of power in northern india(unless all of northern india is kashmir)

PLease refer to the CEA site with the reports(the following link is for the 12 th of august, you can dig out whatever other date that you want)

http://www.cea.nic.in/god/opm/daily_generation_overview/2008_08_12.pdf

J&K(please read as Jammu and Kashmir, includes jammu region) produced 2.64 MU power out of a total of 262.88 MU in the northern grid.....i may be bad at mathematics but this does not add up to 84%, please help me mirallionz......

good that you are taking lessons from the pakistani and indian media, throwing out factoids out of nowhere, and getting thumbs up responses from others, in case you choose to disagree with the figures from an indian govt site(aakhir indian govt galat data degi kashmir ka), i would request you to let me know of the names of the power plants (all hydel power plants) in kashmir , and you ll know the veracity of ur fact

PS....vaise this fact is very close to reality for PoK, mangla dam close to mirpur supplies over 80% of punjab (pakistan state)'s power needs and gives back 0% of the power to PoK....

Musadiq Ali said...

@SUCHI
dear yes, I maybe wrong in the facts...but the real fact is that 88% of the power that kashmir produces is exported to rest of India and we only get 12% of what we produce...
forget it...i know my statistics might not be correct...
for gods sake I am 18 year old kashmiri trying to tell u that we are humans and not animals...
our human rights dont even exist and the media can never report when Indian army drowned 22 school children in kashmir....city burnt on the whole criminal act and amazingly the Indian media NEVER RREPORTED IT....
plz beg of u to wake up and urslef see where the jsutice doesnt prevail.....
WAKE UP INDIANS...BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE...

dear sister,
I feel like standing up and embracing u tightly...
finally I think that some one understands what we go through everyday...finally I see a ray of hope from some where...ppl like u is wot we kashmiris need...
A BUNCH OF INTELLECTUAL 'PATRIOTIC' INDIANS WHO ARE COURAGEOUS ENOUGH TO STAND UP AGAINST THEIR OWN NATION FOR JUSTICE IN THE DISCRIMINATED KASHMIR.....
and well sister, u said u want me to keep u updated with all whats hapening in kashmir...
srry, but I have decided to stop writing about the miseries of my ppl...now it's ur turn to wake up and realise the honesty in this 18 year old bloggers writing...
I write from a prespective of an ordinary kashmiri youth just like me....
I dont care for religion or politics...
just want the human rights violation to end...can't see mky ppl bleeding any more...
I am rlly moved by ur comnt sister..I rlly am...at least u had the courage to see the hard unfortunate truth in my writing...that our sense of pride gets raped everyday...!!!!

Musadiq Ali said...

By the way folks I am sorry but I have decided to stop writing about the whole issue...
It's no fun repeating the same sad story time and again...I had to put forward the point of view of an ordinary Kashmiri and that I did...I can't repeat what happens every day when a mother get raped or a brother disappears for ever...ALTHOUGH I STILL FEEL GUILTY FOR NOT DOING SOMETHING DRAMATIC TO HELP MY PEOPLE...but I guess that's all I could do...
now it's ur choice (by u, I mean the patriotic Indian citizens who are totally blinded by the media)..ur choice to decide whether to have the courage to stand up against ur own beloved countries policies in kashmir or to go ahead and think of us kashmirs as some fndemantalist fanatics..!
in my previous blogs I have already given u some idea of what ever I wanted to say, a very honest and genuine prespective of a kashmiri teenager who suffers everyday...and what the Indian media never reports
but now even I think it's better for me not to involve myself in the highly political debate coz u never know when some men in UNIFORM will come knocking on my door and who knows if I will ever get a chance to blog again....!!!
I am only 18 and I want to live..I better conitnue suffering everyday than someday be called as a fake encounter or go as a 'disappearance case' in the books of law who will never call it a death in torture chambers.....!
wake up people....see what the media never reports and yes, one very honest suggestion to all you non-kashmiri folk out there...
keep urself updated with all the latest from kashmir's unheard side of story through the local newspaper "Greater Kashmir"...
I better leave it to the pro's to do the talking and take the risk of daring their mortal lives for the sake of their land..
no I am not brave or courageous like them, but I am just a regular guy who wants to see his people smile again......

I think points are valid. I am a Kashmiri Pandit living in London and was trying to down to the truth- whats happening in kassmir and bumped into your Blog.

Fight for your rights, but please do look beyond politics of religion. Doesnt do any good to anyone. And Pakistan, is defenitely not an answer. But yes, Kashmiris have to get justice. Its what they want..so why not. Just go and raise your pitch and ask why not??? another revolutinary protest ..wot say??

compliments for the good effort on brnging the facts to light.
it is a fact that state produces enough power and major portion goves to india, with only compensation us of 12% of this vast natural resource. All the major hydral power projects in the state have always established under Central schemes and having this huge hudral power potential, still the kashmiris face dark power cuts in summers also. It was never any sincere efforts of Indian establishment to make the state self-sufficient in any area and always kept us under their feet. There are other sectors in which we kashmiris can set monopoly in addition to kashmiri handicrafts, horticulture, etc. Taking the advantage of claimatic conditions of the State, the Indian establishment has always closed doors for other sectors be it IT, educational, food processing etc. It is high time for kashmiris now to think and resist in terms of remaining dependent on indian establishment. Can Karnataka become educational and IT hub why not we.

thank u ppl for supporting our cause...from all around the globe I can see few kashmiris who still wet their eyes when a kashmiri dies....
but the fact of the matter is...

we are not against the great nation which India is...but rather against the Indian government for it's policies in kashmir over the last two decades.....
hope our patriotic Indian brothers out there have the courage to stand up for us....

I am from Himachal and a constant refrain I hear there is same which you have mentioned about power. We produce all the power and still we dont get anything. It is called convetnional wisdom, my dear, and very often it is untrue. It is in our nature to believe in sensationalistic and fantastic ideas like kashmiris being robbed off thier own power by a villain Union, India. The facts and data on the other hands tell you the tuth but data is often very boring so most of us dont give it a damn.

In Mumbai, Marathis often complain that kids are not taught local culture, local language. They blame Indian Government. In north east same thing. In Tamilnadu, Tamil subnationalism thrives on Delhi Bashing. So question is who is this India? Who is this Union and Government which each of us is blaming?

You are only 18 years old , so may be you havent seen world yet or even India. Travel a bit, see what India is all about. And then ask yourslef why Kashmir is burning and suffering. Why Army is deployed there! Who has burned bridges, blown off schools? Who has gone across border to bring in the weapons? Who has started this vicious cycle? And no, we in India , do get pretty true picture of kashmir..there are enough channels which show what kashmiris are going through. But the present crisis, come one, this is like two school kids fighting for a triffle and now even thier families and neighbours and uncles and aunts have got involved. And conventional wisdom has set in. Every opinion, however misplaced now becomes truth. Nobody is hearing what others are saying. Everybody is shouting and the pandemonium continous....

Musadiq Ali said...

@gaurav
I respect ur views and opinion..
but srry to say u never get a true picture of kashmir...
just for instance tell me, why can't the media report when army men thrash a local imam in a masjid...???
or why couldnt the media report when a mother and daughter where raped in handwara and their father was tortured to death...????
or why couldnt the media report when army men drowned 22 school children when their teacher was getting molested....????
or justify why can't the media report when I just like my other friends step outside my home in fear and god forbid if I or any of my peers forget our identity cards...we may disappear in the custody....and as usual get a nameless grave....
justify this ....plz gaurav...i want my answers....u have to answer the already widowed mothers who lose their sons every day at the hands of brutal aggression by Indian troopers
for gods sake tell me a reason why wont the people raise anti India slogans....???
we are not against India but it's policies in Kashmir....and u sau u get a true picture...!!!!

MIRALLIONZ® For all the questions you have raised , I can have hundreds more. E.g I can ask you about those hindus and Sikhs who have been killed and hounded from Kashmir? Who did that? Millitary? Who started killings in kashmir first of all? Do you know who had attacked kashmir soon after independence and what they did, or is it all forgotten? Who started bombing bridges and schools and throwing grenades on streets? Who started this hatred first of all? Once army was deployed, the vicious circle was completed. The poison was injected. In the madness that ensues such violence where an armyman doesn't know who the gunmen could be, what can be expected?

World over, we know that in armed conflict, henious crimes are committed. So we know that army has done many such crimes in kashmir. And it is not hidden and few culprits have also been punished. And no, we do read and hears about all this and feel equally revulsed.

The point is that, Kashmir is in a vicious circle and we know who insrigated it and stoked the fires. It has happended in Punjab also before. No one is right or wrong. It is madness. But only way out of this emotional frezy and madness is to take an objective view of situation. Innocent Lives have been lost...on either sides.

You have problem venturing out of your home wihout ID card? Let me tell you after series of Bomb blats recently in Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, We face similar problem in Mumbai also. It might not be as accute as you face, but it is similar. Even getting an internet connection is not same anymore. Police can stop and ask you questions about your identity. Renting a house for a bahcelor has become difficult. So who shall I blame? The Police? What choice have they got? Should I blame those unnamed, unidentified, masked men who bombed innocents people and dont even show who they are? This is how fear is created by few mad men and everybody has to pay price.

And FYI, I have friends who live in Jammu and Kashmir and I have vistied Kashmir many times, so my views are not merely made by media.

Musadiq Ali said...

@gaurav
brother I respect ur views and opinion but the fact still remains...United Nations considers kashmir a disputed territory and says that 'PLEBISCITE' is the only justified way out of this....
which Indian govt. willnever allow to happen....
the fact of the matter is...in the midst of this frenzy...we the ordinary COMMON kashmiris suffer...
yes, and we have every ryt to revolt against oppression...
I dont know why can't the Indian policy makers apply some sympathetic policy on kashmir which will inturn help India regain the confidence of kashmiris....trust me, as long as we conitinue to be haunted by men in arms....we are not gna stop revolting....
we have every right to....

@sadat kashmiri
brother I can assess what pain u would be going through when seeing our folks being opressed..but as I have said earlier it isn't the fault of our Indian brothers...they themselves are blinded by the media....they don't know what we face everyday....
I think the best thing we young folks can do for our valley is to tell our fellow Indians what the media never tells them...raise awareness about the kashmir issue in the Indian community...and trust me , India is quite a gr8 nation...our fellow Indians will come for our help and stand up for our rights...let's take an allnew approach, no not the protest but a silent revolution....!!!!

Hi mirallionz

First of all, I am very glad to see a young blogger from kashmir. People like you are the future of kashmir.

I ask you just one thing. Try to travel around in India. You don't need to get a visa for this :) It doesn't cost you a lot of money as well. Try to see the backwaters of Kerala and the tea plantations in Assam. Try to talk to the people there. Try to see the differences in language and religion (unlike what you might have heard, there is no religion called hinduism. It is all very different everywhere)

You will see that people face similar problems everywhere else. There are worried about poverty, unemployment, cultural subjugation, environment, terrorism .. so on.

Of course, you Kashmiris have to face the worst because of continuous presence of the army. I am ashamed of this, and I hope the wounds caused by this will be healed in the future.

Then, I don't even know if Kashmir remains part of India in the future or becomes independent. My desire hardly matters for this question. It is people like you who have to stand up and think with 100% freedom. I hope that this fundamental right will not be denied for much longer.

I consider Kashmiris to be my brothers, and I will do my best to help them obtain their basic human rights.

I am talking basically over the question of the plebiscite. I think it is only a matter of time before this happens. But a minor point : UN regulations require Pakistani army and the outsiders withdraw from the occupied portions of Kashmir before the plebiscite is held. Do you think they will do that ? In any case, I hope the plebiscite arrives soon.

Musadiq Ali said...

@ray lightning
yes, bro u r quite right abot the fact that ppl all over India face many problems but the fact remains kashmir still is a disputed territory unlike kerala or any other state of india...
a plebiscite is the only way out ...but it will never happen coz neither india nor pakistan will let it happen....n in the middle we common kashmiris will continue to suffer...

Ray Lightning said...

Don't lose hope brother. It is a crime to be without hope when you are young. Trust me, things will be better in the future.

Legal terminology has no meaning to me. What counts are the feelings of people. Once upon a time, India was "legally" part of the British empire. Law doesn't bind us humans eternally.

So in my opinion, if Keralites wish to separate from India, nobody and nothing can stop them. Similar thing with Kashmiris.

The onus is on people like me to raise awareness and prevent the atrocities and nonsense that is happening in Kashmir. I will try to do my best. To begin with, I will write a post on my blog.

Mohammad Umar Baba (Byline: Baba Umar) said...

Hi folks,
Just wished to answer Mr Ray lighting.

He has wonderfully reminded us of UN regulations, but he forgot to mention Mushraff's propsal of 2007. In that, he offered India that Pak will pull back its troops from A kashmir, but India didn't respond. It rather added more battalions in the border districts of Kashmir.

Without praising Mush, I feel he showed enough flexibility but he didn't meet with the same reply form India.

Raylighting was suggesting mirallionz to visit indian villages. But i have visited half-of India, people do have concerns there, but all concerns and demands come under the ambit of Indian constitution.

However, Kashmir was a separate entity and India presence is simply take as an occupation here.

I challenge him to visit Kashmir and see for himself what the issue is all about. It is not about employment, environment or anything else.

Had it been so Kashmir would not have observed strikes for 5 years in its cause which is 62 year old.

But anywayz I am happy to read him saying that he supports Kashmiris in their legal demand and what they have been promised.

Regards,

Musadiq Ali said...

i guess Mr.Ray is among the few Indians who have enough courage to think out of the patriotic box and see the real truth of kashmir...
we need India to realise that even though it might be such a great nation but when it comes to kashmir...it's a total failure....!!!
and now finally people seem to have woken up to this supression and oppression....

Ray Lightning said...

Hi KashmirViews

Can you stop being so self-centred ? You might think that Kashmir can coolly seperate itself from India and everything will be fine. No you are wrong. India will be burning. The Indian Union simply cannot view the seperatist movement in Kashmir different from similar movements in Assam, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and so on. Your explanation of "the ambit of Indian constitution" is laughable. Do you care about what is written down in the Indian constitution, why do you think anybody else cares ? It will be like a house of cards falling down.

In Yugoslavia, Slovenia seperated out first. Soon the country broke into pieces - Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Herzagovina and now Kosovo. I wouldn't have anything against it if not for the human toll, mass murder and genocide which followed.

These fears have to be addressed. Similar fears sorround Pakistan.

If Kashmir becomes independent instead of joining Pakistan, it will add fire to the seperatist movements in Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP.

You might think you don't have to care about what happens elsewhere. You might think Kashmir will be fine. But be realistic. What happens in India will have huge repurcussions in Kashmir. It will have huge repurcussions in Pakistan. The whole region will erupt into all out war.

I strongly support Kashmiri self rule. But I cannot sacrifice a million lives of fellow Indians to let it happen. I cannot risk a mass murder of Muslims in Hyderabad, Delhi or Lucknow. I cannot risk an all out nuclear war between India and Pakistan.

You might call Musharaf a statesman, but he was first a military dictator. He was the aggressor to begin the Kargil war. You might not care about the dead Indian and Pakistani soldiers, but I do care about them. Musharaf has no love even amongst Pakistanis. What we need are true statesmen, and not greedy politicians who just care about grabbing power.

Please try to look at the post I have written down in my blog. Mirallionz please look at it as well.

Musadiq Ali said...

@ray lightning
I think we don't have to sacrifice anything but all we kashmiris demand is an end to the human rights vioalation by Indian military in kashmir...thats all we ask for....isn't that fair enough???
just give the people the sense of freedom they had before the start insurgency and u will urself see a reversal in the sympathy towards pakistan or any other country....
freedom doesn't always mean independence...!!!!!
